Finding speech pathology employment can be a great way to advance your interest in joining the therapeutic industry. However, there are a few important considerations that you need to make before you can be successful. Here are a few of the steps that you’re going to have to take in the pursuit of your dream career.

  1. Research the positions available in the field. Aside from not knowing what you want to go to school for, not finding any available jobs after graduation is probably one of the most frustrating hurdles you will have to overcome. It may not be a good idea to pursue a career that has a lot of competition, especially if there aremany openings.
  2. Go to school for certification. This will be the longest step you will have to take during your quest for speech pathology employment. However, without it you would not be eligible for most of the jobs in the therapeutic industry. Make sure you pick out a good school that has a proven track record for success.
  3. Actively look for internships. While you are in school, you should start seeking out internships – some are paid while others are not. However, an internship can give you valuable field experience that will increase your chances of being employed out of school – in fact, many internships turn into full time employment positions.

A career as a therapist is an attainable goal – you just have to work hard to see your schooling through.

Steps to Pursuing a Career as a Lawyer

There is no question that practicing law is a noble profession. Oftentimes, it is also lucrative. Anyone interested in becoming a lawyer should take some time to plan how to reach that goal. After speaking with a career counselor to better understand what the law profession really is, students need to make some decisions, take some tests, study a lot, and, finally, take a bar exam.

  1. Deciding: The first decision is what type of law to practice. From tax lawyers to defense attorneys, there are many law specialties. Making this decision will help you know where to go to school and what internship opportunities to explore. For example, if you wish to become a Florida injury attorney, you must explore opportunities in Florida.
  2. LSAT: Next, you must take the LSAT (Law School Aptitude Test). How you score on this test determines where you can go to law school. It is the first step of the application process, and the test lasts four days.
  3. School: Once you have chosen a specialty and a school, the studying begins. Law school typically lasts three years for full-time students, although it can take longer for those who are unable to attend school full time.
  4. Bar: Once you have graduated from law school, there is one final hurdle: the bar exam. Attorneys must take the bar exam in the state they wish to practice in. For example, a Florida injury attorney must take the Florida bar exam.  Many choose to work as an intern or associate at a law firm while they are studying for the exam.

Deciding To Become A Teacher

Image via Wikipedia

Even when they are little children, some people know that they want to grow up and be a teacher. This path is not so clear to others. There are many people who get a degree in another field, start working in it, only to find that they enjoy teaching, and so they change direction.

Some of the ways that you can determine if you are a good candidate for the teaching field, is to take a look at what you did in highschool. If you did well in the general classes, and enjoyed them, then this is a good indicator. If you enjoyed helping other students learn the material, and explaining it to them came easily to you, and you felt like it was something that you could do all day long, then that is another indicator that teaching may be the career for you.

Being able to help people reach their full potential is important. Teachers have a major influence on the lives of their students. It is even more so when they are very young. Many students who came from broken homes, and other stressful situations have spoken positively of their teachers, and how they helped them build their self-esteem. Teachers can help their students see more in themselves than they do on their own.

If you love to encourage and build up others, point out their strengths, and can help them with their weaknesses in a positive way, then teaching may be the right field for you to go into.

Many people have a hard time deciding what they want to be when they grow up and have a career of their own. They have many interests and a few ideas, but it can be hard to commit to an education, if you are not sure of where you are going.

One of the easiest ways that you can find your career path, is to take the time to think about the things that you enjoy. Everyone has their own personal strengths and weaknesses. We all have things that we get excited about and love to do. The ideal career would be one that you truly enjoy, that you are excited to get up and get going on whatever your latest project is.

Many people switch from job to job and do not ever really settle into a career. Some say that it is just the way that the times are. Few people are happy with the work that they do for their jobs. They chose their careers based on demand, or pay or the prestige of it, not because they loved it. When this is the path that is chosen, it is almost impossible for anyone to be happy long enough to make a career out of it.

When you know yourself, and know what you are good at as well as enjoy, you are more likely to choose a career path that you enjoy, that will be fulfilling for the rest of your life. When you choose what you love, you do not dread going to work.

Choosing A Course Of Study

Once you have determined what career path you want to take, it is easy to know what classes you should take because of the degree requirements. However, if you have not determined what path is the right one for you, then choosing a course of study can be very difficult.

There are a couple of ways that you can go about choosing your courses until you know which direction that you really want to go. One way is to just focus on your core classes. Taking your core classes can give you more time to think about what it is that you want to do with your life. As you are studying and working in these core classes, you may become more aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and what you would really enjoy doing.

Another option, is to take some elective classes. Taking some of the classes that you think may be a possible career path for you can help you decide if it is really like you think it will be. You can find out just how much you like it. Many people like this approach, because no one wants to work through a degree, only to find that they do not like the career field, and wish that they would have done something else.

Either option works well for most people. If you try both and still have a hard time deciding, a career counselor may be able to help you  make that final determination on which degree you want to pursue.
